The Department of Social Development says that foreign nationals are coming to South Africa to claim social grants money which they transfer to their countries.
The department’s director-general, Vusi Madonsela, points out that some foreigners travelled into the country with the sole intention of claiming grants and repatriating the money over the border.
Madonsela states that in a bid to stop the fraud, the department has begun to re-register grants recipients, adding that so far, 111 foreigners have been identified and subsequently removed from the social grant register.
